Question 5a- 5e

• At thiswebsite, you will find an interactive graph concerning New York City's geography and income.

• Read the introduction and click on different "subway lines" to see how the interactive graph works.

• Note that the abbreviations stand for the four different boroughs:

MAN = Manhattan

BRX = Bronx

BRK = Brooklyn

QNS = Queens

• Also note that hovering your mouse over the dots on the graph displays the subway stop and the median income of households in that area.

5-a). In which of the boroughs shown is the median household income highest?
5-b). In the borough of Queens (QNS), which subway stop is an outlier compared to the rest of the stops in the area? Explain why this stop would be considered an outlier.

5-c). Of the 3 boroughs shown, which borough shows the least variability in median household income?

5-d). Of the 3 boroughs shown, which borough shows the least variability in median household income?

5-e) Imagine you have a friend who is studying economics, and she wants to do a survey of incomes in the areas around the Line 2 subway (she doesn't know about this New Yorker graph!). She is also pressed for time, so she decides she'll probably get a good idea of the incomes if she surveys people around the first and last stops of the line.

She finds that the median income where she gets on (Flatbush Ave.-Brooklyn College, the first stop) is $37,073, and the median income where she gets off (Wakefield-241 St., the last stop) is $38,261. Based on these data, she decides that the income along Line 2 is generally stable, in the upper 30,000's, with low variability. Based on the graph of Line 2, do you agree with your friend's assessment? Why or why not?

5-f)Based on this module's reading and presentations, why do you think the author of this graph chose the median household income instead of the mean household income to describe the central tendency of this data?

Part II:

Questions 1-7

• Open Module 3 Exerise File 1. It contains a selection of data from the American Time Use Survey, a survey conducted by the US Bureau of Labor Statistics that collects information on the amount of time people report spending on different daily activities, from child care to work to leisure. This file contains data from the year 2015.

• The file contains the following variables:

GENDER: male = 1, female = 2

SLEEP: Time spent sleeping (minutes per day)

LAUNDRY: Time spent doing laundry (minutes per day)

EATDRINK: Time spent eating and drinking (minutes per day)

1) Construct a histogram for the variable SLEEP. Paste the graph.

2) Compute descriptive statistics for the variable EATDRINK. Use the "Explore" method covered in this week's SPSS presentation. Paste the table.

3) Construct a histogram for the variable EATDRINK. Paste the graph.

4)Construct a Descriptives table for the LAUNDRY variable displayed by GENDER. Review end of SPSS presentation for steps (hint: you'll be using the "Explore" option). You should end up with one table that displays descriptive statistics for each gender separately.

5)How would you describe the shape of the distribution for the sleep variable?

6)What is the numerical value of the skew for the EATDRINK variable?

7)Does the histogram of the EATDRINK variable indicate a ceiling or a floor effect? Explain.

Part III: SPSS Data Entry and Analysis

Data provided below.

The steps will be the same as the ones you have been practicing in Part I of the assignment; the only difference is that you are now responsible for creating the data file, as well. Remember to do the following:

a) Name and define variables under Variable View, then return to Data View to enter the data

b) Paste all SPSS output and graphs into your homework file at the appropriate place.

Part III:

Questions 1-4

The data here are a selection of data based on the American Time Use Survey that we've been working with. They represent time spent in job search activities (minutes per day) for a sample of unemployed Americans surveyed in 2015. Follow the directions below to set up your file.

1. Open a new SPSS data file.

2. Create one new variable called "Job_Mins" in the SPSS file. Use "Variable View" to create this variable. It should be coded as "Scale" within the "Measure" column.

3. Return to the "Data View" and enter the data shown in the box to the left.

1. In SPSS, compute descriptive statistics for these data. Use the "Explore" method.

2. Create a histogram describing the average time spent in job search activities.

3. Based on your output, what are the values for the mean, median, and skewness of the distribution?

4. Based on your graph and your answers above, which measure of central tendency is most appropriate for describing this group of scores? Why?

Part IV: Cumulative

Questions 1-2

• The BDI (Beck et al., 1961) is an instrument widely used to assess levels of depression in individuals in a variety of settings.

• The scores range from 0-63 (whole numbers only).

• A researcher administers the BDI to a sample of college students. The results appear in the table here.

• They are entered as two columns here to save space. In your SPSS file, you will enter them all into one column as usual.

1) Using SPSS, run a frequencies analysis on these scores. Paste the frequency table below.

2) What percentage of the sample have a BDI score of 11?
