A bar of rectangular cross section is loaded and supported as shown in the figure.

A bar is bent into an arc that extends upward from the ends to the center. The height h of the bar is the distance between the top and bottom edges of the bar, perpendicular to the tangent of the arc. A pin supports the arc at a horizontal distance a from the left end, and a horizontal roller supports the arc at a horizontal distance a from the right end. The pin and roller are a horizontal distance L apart, with the center of the bar at a horizontal distance L⁄2 from and vertical distance δ above either support. Load P acts down on the left end of the bar, and another load P acts down on the right end.

The distance between supports is
L = 1.75 m,
and the height of the bar is
h = 184 mm.

The deflection at the midpoint is measured as 2.0 mm.

(a) What is the maximum normal strain ε at the top and bottom of the bar?

(b) If allowable strain εa = 0.0008 and the deflection cannot exceed 4.3 mm, what is the maximum permissible length (in m) of the bar?
