Uncharged ammonia [NH3(aq)] is toxic to fish at a concentration of 0.01 mg/L NH3-N. What is the maximum concentration (mg/L) of total ammonia nitrogen (the sum of the N concentrations in NH3 and NH4+) that can be in solution without causing toxicity at pH 7.0? At pH 9.0?

Verified Expert

The problem is about the determination of the maximum concentration of total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) in a solution at a given pH. Chemical equilibrium is the concept in which the solution was based. At neutral pH (7.0), the maximum TAN yielded a value below the maximum concentration. However, at a basic pH (9.0) the maximum TAN yielded a higher value than the maximum permissible concentration. Hence, a higher pH solution will be more toxic for fishes.
