In February 2004, scientists at Purdue University used a highly sensitive technique to measure the mass of a vaccinia virus (the kind used in smallpox vaccine). The procedure involved measuring the frequency of oscillation of a tiny sliver of silicon (just 31.0nm long) with a laser, first without the virus and then after the virus had attached itself to the silicon. The difference in mass caused a change in the frequency. We can model such a process as a mass on a spring.
Part A Find the ratio of the frequency with the virus attached ( fS+V) to the frequency without the virus (fS) in terms of mV and mS, where mV is the mass of the virus and mS is the mass of the silicon sliver. Notice that it is not necessary to know or measure the force constant of the spring ( fS+V)/fS = ?
Part B In some data, the silicon sliver has a mass of 2.11×10?16g and a frequency of 2.02×1015Hz without the virus and 2.85×1014Hz with the virus. What is the mass of the virus in grams?
Part C What is the mass of the virus in femtograms?
A 78-kg base runner begins his slide into second base when he is moving at a speed of 4.2 m/s. The coefficient of friction between his clothes and Earth is 0.70. He slides so that his speed is zero just as he reaches base.
A 10 m beam of mass 330 kg extends over a ledge. The beam is not attached, but simply rests on surface. A 53 kg student intends to position the beam so that he can walk to the end of it. How far from the edge of the ledge can the beam extend.
A resistor with resistance 14M? is connected in series with a capacitor with capacitance 1.0?F and a battery with emf 13.5.0V. what is the time constant
If astronauts could travel at v = 0.950 c, we on Earth would say it takes (4.20 / 0.970) = 4.42 years to reach Alpha Centauri, 4.20 light-years away. The astronauts disagree. How much time passes on astronauts' clocks? What is the distance to Alph..

A pot of hot water is boiling on your stove. The pot is in the shape of a round cylinder made of aluminum which is 10 cm in radius. The aluminum is 3 mm thick. You notice that after 25 minutes.
An oil drop carries one excess electron and weighs 9.2 10-15 N. What electric field strength is necessary to suspend drop so it is motionless.
If the coefficient of static friction is 0.951, illustrate what is the maximum speed that the car can take without skidding?
An initially stationary 2.0 kg object accelerates horizontally and uniformly to a speed of 20 m/s in 1.9 s. (a) In that 1.9 s interval, how much work is completed on the object by the force accelerating it.
The wire is located in a uniform magnetic field B directed perpendicular to the wire. Compute the magnitude of B when the force on the wire due to B is 0.200 N.
