A counter flow condenser that is employed in a steam power plant handles 32,000 kg/hr of saturated steam at 52 °C. The cooling water enters the condenser at 17 °C and leaves at 28 °C. The tubes are 20 mm inside diameter and 27 mm outside diameter. Cooling water flows through the tubes at an average velocity of 2.3 m/s. The heat transfer coefficient on the steam side is 4087 W/m2-K. Ignore thermal resistance of the wall material. The length of each tube pass cannot exceed 2.8 m.

A. How much heat in kW is transferred in the heat exchanger?

B. What is the mass flow rate of the cooling water?

C. How many tubes are required for the cooling water flow rate above?

D. What is the convective heat transfer coefficient on the cooling water side?

E. Calculate the heat transfer area of the heat exchanger.

F. How many tube passes are needed in the condenser given the tube pass length restriction?
