A water reservoir 500 m by 500 m by 2 m deep located on a hill supplies water to a town at a gauge pressure of 500 kPa. The reservoir is filled by a mountain stream that flows directly into the reservoir. During times of high rainfall the reservoir fills up and water overflows through a 200 mm pipe to a nearby river next to the town. Given the water pressure in the town is 500 kPa what is the elevation of the reservoir in meters compared to the town? A young Waikato University engineering student recognizes this is a waste of energy and convinces the town mayor to set up a turbine at the end of the 200 mm overflow pipe to generate electricity. After the turbine is installed the water velocity in the 200 mm pipe after the turbine is measured to be 1 m/s. What is the mass flow rate in kg/s through the turbine? The turbine and electric generator as a combined system operate with an efficiency of 85%. Pipe friction losses in the 200 mm pipe are negligible. How much power in kW.
