Problem: Maya Angelou's poem "The Mask" was modeled after P.L. Dunbar's poem, "We Wear the Mask." Angelou admired Dunbar for his honest and thought provoking depictions of African America people at the turn of the 20th Century. (While the author is inspired to write the poem, the narrator in a poem is rarely the author. We would never make this mistake with a song or novel, so be careful not to assume the author is the speaker in poetry. Look for clues to identify the different characters and speakers in a poem.) Post Instructions: Who is the speaker of the line, "It was our submission that made your world go 'round?" How do you know? The poem goes on to say, "From living on the ledge of death, they kept my race alive by wearing the mask?" What is "the mask" and how is this relevant today?
