Maya Angelou's poem "The Mask" was modeled after P.L. Dunbar's poem, "We Wear the Mask." Angelou admired Dunbar for his honest and thought provoking depictions of African America people at the turn of the 20th Century. (While the author is inspired to write the poem, the narrator in a poem is rarely the author. We would never make this mistake with a song or novel, so be careful not to assume the author is the speaker in poetry. Look for clues to identify the different characters and speakers in a poem.)
