Assignment - Weyerhaeuser Company v Ross Simmons Hardwood Lumber Company Questions
Weyerhaeuser Company v. Ross-Simmons Hardwood Lumber Company (2007)
Writing instruction - Your project must effectively communicate the following information:
Who the plaintiff(s) and defendant(s) are
Any necessary background on the case (relevant info about the product/service, type of market, etc)
What are the arguments on each side?
What is the defendant accused of? What is their defense?
What is the plaintiff's injury?
What is the market definition? Did the two sides have differing market definitions?
How did the case end?
Was there a settlement? Was there a judicial ruling?
Did the case result in any precedents being set?
Finally, relate the case to what we've discussed in class.
Did the result/ruling align with economic theory?
What effect (if any) does the result have on economic efficiency (I.e. social welfare)?
Does this result affect prices/output in the relevant market? Other markets?
Your grade depends on how effectively you communicate the above information. You are highly encouraged to use any combination of figures, tables, graphs, and quotes to help but you are not required to.
Note these instructions are centered around court cases, however, if you choose to do a project about a topic (e.g. recent mergers), the general idea behind these directions still apply. Be sure to discuss the relevant background, the firms/people/markets relevant to the topic, what anticompetitive conduct is being analyzed (if it's a merger, analyze the market power implications, if it's a pricing policy, such as surge pricing, discuss how that relates to discriminatory pricing), what anticompetitive effects there are, and, finally, relate the topic to what the economic theory says (is this inefficient? is there likely deadweight loss?)
