Question: Fanconi syndrome was first named after Swiss pediatrician Guido Fanconi in the 1930s. Individuals with Fanconi syndrome develop hard crystals in the proximal tubule of the nephron. These crystals cause damage to the proximal tubule and interfere with its main function. One symptom of proximal tubule damage is the loss of phosphates from the blood (hypophosphatemia). Since phosphates are an important building block of ATP individuals with hypophosphatemia have decreased ATP production.

Individuals with Fanconi syndrome also have higher concentrations of glucose, amino acids, sodium, potassium, calcium, chlorine, and bicarbonates in their urine. They may also suffer from acidosis (higher acid concentrations in the blood) and dehydration.
