The Nottingham Medical Hospital is the largest in the country and has the most state of the arts medical equipment to foster patient care. Lately patients have been choosing some of the smaller hospitals as there have been many complaints by family members about the way their sick relatives have been treated by nurses and some of the doctors.
The hospital administrator has been trying to change the culture of the workers to make them more patient-friendly. The unit managers do not get along well with the doctors; and often the doctors are seen as dictators by some of the nurses. Things don't seem to be improving. The doctors complain about the unit managers not allowing them the freedom to practice medicine in the way that supports the recovery of the patients under their care.
The unit managers say they do not like it when the doctors give instructions to the nurses without first checking with them to ensure that it is OK for the nurse to carry out the functions. The doctors are highly sought-after specialists in their field. They are the ones that make the hospital such an attractive place for patients to recover from surgery or other medical procedures. The specialists can remove their practice from the grounds of the NMH and go to one of the smaller hospitals. That would spell disaster for NMH since they would lose patients and therefore the revenue would dip drastically. Revenue is already falling.
When the chairman of the board of NMH asked the HR Manager to seek to address the problem urgently since the hospital was in danger of going out of business, her response was that she had tried all she could. "Nothing seems to work. Everyone is pig headed and wants to have things their own way. No one is willing to compromise for the good of the hospital."
