Q1. An employee in your Company has started disappearing in the middle of the workday. All employees get two 15-minute breaks that are paid, but if the employee takes longer than 15 minutes then it should be unpaid. Additionally, all employees get a 30-minute lunch break that is unpaid. For the 15-minute breaks employees do not clock out and usually will go to the breakroom to grab a snack from the vending machine or to get coffee. For the 30-minute lunch break employees clock out and can go out for lunch but most of them go to the breakroom to warm up lunches from home or will buy from vending again.
This employee walks away from his desk saying he is taking his 15-minute break but does not re-appear until 20 - 25 minutes later. For his lunch break he will usually take up to 45 minutes and say that there was a long line to get his food. The Manager is OK with the longer lunch break because the Company is not paying him, but the 15-minute breaks are paid time and he should only be taking 15 minutes for that, no more.
The Manager has come to you for advice.
a. What is the logical first step you will recommend to the Manager to address this situation and why?
b. If the behavior suddenly escalates and the employee takes a 2-hour long lunch break, what would be the next step of the process?
