Discussion Post: Evaluation Essay Prewriting

Use the following questions to help prepare you for writing the Evaluation Essay. Some of the questions may not be relevant depending upon the program/law/policy you choose to evaluate.

Keep in mind that the goal of this assignment is to evaluate a policy/law/program related to MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES by considering various criteria.

For example, if you are evaluating the effectiveness of the law increasing the legal age to purchase cigarettes from 18 to 21, you would consider the likelihood of that law achieving its goals. The most basic goal is to reduce smoking. So the question is: will increasing the legal age of purchasing cigarettes from 18 to 21 reduce overall smoking rates? After thinking about the ethics and practicality of this law, you may determine that the law is mediocre because while the goal is commendable, implementation is not practical and the law doesn't go far enough in restricting access - therefore, it will not achieve its primary goal. If you would like to, you can recommend whether the law should be put in place, amended (if so, how?), or forgotten entirely.

It may help to consider the criteria as elements of a rubric by which to score the policy/law/program.

Question A. What program/law/policy related to MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES have you chosen to evaluate?
Question B. Are you entering into the evaluation of this program/law/policy with pre-conceived thoughts about it?
