Assignment:
In week 5, students will read some interesting material, although these readings are a bit different from the previous weeks. You have one scholarly article to read, along with several interviews about women's participation during WWII. While a little different, nonetheless, the information is interesting and insightful. For this discussion, please discuss the experience of women during the World War II. How did they contribute to the war effort? Did race, ethnicity, and class impact or affect their experience? Was World War II a watershed for women? Explain.
Our readings this week offer first person accounts of women during the war, the voices of women themselves and their very different experiences. It's hard to believe that during the war, 200,000 Japanese American CITIZENS were rounded up and sent to internment camps. Now think about that-these were American citizens who were stripped of their constitutional rights and basically imprisoned for the duration of the war. The reading about Japanese American women's experiences in the camps is very insightful. Select three of the women from the reading and compare their experiences.
The reading on the Women's Auxiliary Corps (Wacky Times) poses a very interesting question: did WWII really open the door for women's advancement--as we often assume--or did the U.S. simply use women's labor to fill a void left by men sent off to the military? What conclusion can you reach from the article? What is the legacy of women's work during the war? Cite examples.
