Assignment:
Patrick is the boss of a very successful Italian restaurant located in a small town in New York. Recently, he has brought in some new workers to help out around the restaurant. The new employees include Jill, Parker and Ryan. Jill's main responsibilities include answering the phones and helping customers when they come in by packing up their orders. Parker's job consists of working the pizza oven by making sure all pizza is getting cooked properly and boxing the pizza up. Ryan will be the new waiter in the restaurant and will serve all customers that come to dine in.
These new workers are all different in the way they work. Jill is inexperienced working in the restaurant industry and is always asking questions. The questions were never ending and very repetitive to Patrick. She is always looking for direction from Patrick and needs to be motivated to work sometimes. Parker has had a slight amount of experience working in an Italian restaurant. He has questions for Patrick but they are more about getting reassurances from Patrick. Although Parker has less questions, he still goes to Patrick for advice and is always by his side. Ryan has worked at multiple different restaurants before and didn't need much help at all from Patrick. Ryan is always trying to help others but is also very independent. Patrick is facing a dilemma in which he is not certain how to lead his new workers. He wants to make sure these new employees stick around with the holiday season coming up. He also wants to maintain them in hopes they will be there for a while. He is not sure whether he wants to be more of a boss or a friend to his new employees. The ultimate decision was to take it easy and build a relationship with them. Patrick knows how valuable his followers are to the restaurant and he appreciates all they do for the business.
Heather has been working at the restaurant for 5 years now and has noticed Patrick treating the new employees differently. She has observed that Patrick has been delegating a little bit more work to her than usual to take the burden off of some of the new employees. Heather has never been the one to complain about anything but doesn't want to be responsible for picking up the slack for these workers when she is making the same amount as others. Heather is happy with the way her job was and is contemplating whether or not she should say something to Patrick.
Questions:
1. Using the SLII Model, which style of leadership should Patrick give to each Jill, Parker and Ryan?
2. In this case, should Patrick be more task oriented or relationship oriented towards his new employees?
3. What is The Kelley Typology and what type of follower is each new employee?
4. Using the LMX Theory, what could you say about Patricks leadership towards Heather?
