Climate Migration
What do work and climate have to do with the decision to migrate made by the people profiled in the Lustgarten article? When you consider decisions whether or not to migrate made by people you know, did work have to do with it? Did climate have to do with it?
Do you know anyone with connections to countries or regions in the predicted "barely livable hot zone"? Have they observed any significant changes in quality of life and ability to secure work and sustenance?
How have people and governments responded to the presence of climate refugees in places like southern Mexico and El Paso, Texas described in the article? How should they respond, in your opinion?
Just Transition and Climate Justice
What is the "just transition" according to the Climate Justice Alliance (CJA)? In your view, what are two of the most essential of the Just Transition principles listed by the CJA, and why? What are "false solutions" to the climate crisis, according to the authors, and what is wrong with such "solutions"? Whose interests and values might be served or threatened by a just transition approach to combating the climate crisis? Whose interests and values might be served or threatened by "false solutions"?
In what ways do the case studies of Philadelphia (Lakey) and West Virginia and Tonawanda (Tasini) embody the "just transition"? What lessons do they offer us about the challenges, potential pitfalls, and opportunities of carrying out just transition approaches to climate solutions?
Do you agree with the just transition principles? If not, what reservations or critiques do you have about the readings? If so, what do you appreciate about the readings? What opportunities do you see for putting them into action in the LA area? (Or, if you're not in the LA area, in an area you know well?)
