Case Study: Officers arrest two men at a local coffee shop for trespassing. The two offenders were involved in a verbal dispute with other patrons who were of a different ethnic background. The officers' report indicates that the arrests were made to remove the men so that the "situation wouldn't get out of hand." The first offender, Joshua, has a history of run-ins and has a record that includes trespassing and obstruction. The second offender, Randal, has no prior arrests. Each offender is assigned a public defender. Joshua's public defender thinks the charges could be dismissed, but Randal's attorney, known for taking the first deal offered, is not committing to a strategy.
