The Sweet Leaf Tea Co. is recalling 1.5 million bottles of its drinks nationwide after glass was found in the tea, the company announced Thursday.
Four customers have reported finding glass fragments in the bottles of tea, which prompted Sweet Leaf to pull bottles that could be affected "out of an abundance of caution," the company said in a statement. No one was injured, the statement said.
Sweet Leaf spokeswoman Jane Lazgin told NBC News that the company received the first complaint in July "and believed it to be an isolated incident until hearing from three others more recently."
"It is upon the four complaints we felt it was prudent to recall the product to assure that Sweet Leaf is a safe and high quality tea product," Lazgin said.
The recall is limited to 16-ounce bottles of flavored iced tea, with specific production codes. The teas that could cause a risk were all produced between Feb. 27, 2015 and Dec. 6, 2015. "We believe most of those bottles are already out of the marketplace," Lazgin said.
Sweat Leaf Tea Co. said an investigation showed the glass got into the tea as a "result of glass breakage during the filling process."
"Corrective actions have been taken," according to the company, which is owned by Nestlé Waters North America.
