Case: Mr Kyle Williams is a resident who identifies as Aboriginal. His family visits often and he is well-settled in the facility with good relationships with most nurses, carers, and other residents. During one of the family's visits, his daughter tells you that her father is feeling nervous about an upcoming health assessment to determine whether he needs to be moved to a higher level of care. She discloses that he does not trust doctors and is worried that he'll be moved into an area where it is not so easy for him to have the freedom to leave his room, go into the garden, and go on outings. You tell his daughter that you will discuss Mr Williams' concerns with the RN and get back to her and Mr Williams with some more information. She then tells you that she promised her father she wouldn't say anything to staff about his concerns. She says he is worried that staff will think he is making a fuss and will make it harder for him to say what he wants and needs. He would like an Aboriginal nurse to support him. You consult with the RN on duty and she asks you to do some research to find out how the facility can best support Mr Williams and his family. Answer the following questions in your own words. Use your textbooks, library research, and internet information from relevant regulatory and industry/professional bodies to help you.

1. Who or what is CATSINaM? How might CATSINaM help in this situation?

2. What is the intent of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples? Thinking about health, health care, human rights, and cultural safety, why is it important that Australia's First Nations Peoples are recognised by this Declaration?

3. Name and describe at least one service or agency that supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to access culturally appropriate and culturally safe health care, that might be helpful to Mr Williams.

4. Name and describe at least one Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people-run service or agency that actively promotes community health strategies. What do they do, and what impact is it having? With reference to at least one current news story (via a news site or a professional or advocacy association), in one-two paragraphs, summarise how national, State/Territory and local health priorities impact on health delivery services to ATSI people.
