Harlem Renaissance Project/Report
Length of a thousand words
You may not write about the following: Josephine Baker, Zora Neale Hurston, Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, The Nicholas Brothers, Beyonce, and Langston Hughes. write about a figure that is still alive and not dead
Part One: Introduction of Harlem Renaissance Figure (one+ page)
IN YOW (your own words) define The Harlem Renaissance. What exactly was the Renaissance, and why was it significant? Next, introduce the Harlem Renaissance artist and discuss why you selected this individual. Next, provide a brief background on the individual. When and how did the individual get his/her break? How and why did they land in Harlem? What is the individual's "signature" piece? Examine the signature piece: what does it symbolize and represent? How does it exemplify the artist's style and/or message? *Citations needed here Conclude by discussing the legacy of the artist and the ideas within the Harlem Renaissance. What is the impact of this individual and the Harlem Renaissance as a whole?
Part Two Introduction of Contemporary Artist (one+ page)
Introduce the contemporary artist and discuss why you selected this individual. Next, provide a brief background on the individual. When and how did the individual get his/her break? How and why did they land on the "world" stage?
What is the individual's "signature" piece? Examine the signature piece: what does it symbolize and represent? How does it exemplify the artist's style and/or message within his /her artistry? *Citations needed here
Next, discuss the connection between the two artists. Why did you pair them? How and/or why do you consider them similar? Leave us with a final thought on this "partnership." What do you want us to know about these artists?
Note: this artist must be living and pick an artist that you know something about!
Part Three: Intersection Between Poetry and Song (one+ page)
Finally, conclude by discussing one of the poems from the Langston Hughes Poetry Packet (this is posted on Canvas) and compare the poem to a contemporary song (the song can't be the signature piece that you analyzed in part two).
Analyze the poem and the song: What is the larger message of both pieces? What is the commonality between the poem and the song?
Then connect the poem and the song to the two individuals: the Harlem Renaissance figure and the contemporary artist. Note this does not have to be an elaborate and detailed connection; examine how the poem and song exemplify the "spirit" of the two individuals (you can also select a poem by Hughes that is not included in the packet).
Some Key Points to Remember:
*The artist must come from the Harlem Renaissance (dancer, musician, singer, writer/poet artist, painter); then must compare the artist with a contemporary "Living" artist from the same genre.
*If you are having trouble selecting an artist, first start with the genre you are interested in, so for example, if you like poetry, look up a poet from that period. Once you have an artist, begin your research: highlight the important "parts" of the artist's childhood, when and how the artist gets his/her big break, a signature "piece" from the artist. Be sure to cite your sources in-text and complete a work cited page.
