Scenario. A researcher is interested in studying how adolescent social media use influences their self-esteem. He gathers a group of adolescents who use social media an average of 0-3 hours per week, and a group of adolescents who use social media for an average of 4-8 hours per week and compares their ratings of self-esteem on a scale from 1 to 10. He finds that those who use social media more (4-8 hours per week) have higher self-esteem than those who use social media less (for 0-3 hours per week)
1. What is the independent variable? The independent variable is the hours the adolescents spent on social media.
2. How many levels are there for the independent variable? There are two levels for the independent variable. The group that uses social media for 0-3 hours and the group that uses social media for 4-8 hours.
3. What is the dependent variable? How high their self-esteem is from 1-10.
4. What is the confound?
Scenario. A researcher is interested in studying the effect of stress on eating behavior. She recruits two groups of participants to come to her lab for the study. She shows a group of participants who come in at 9am a stress-inducing video that talks about the importance of saving for retirement before the age of 18 and talks about how failing to save for retirement early in life can ruin your chances for having adequate retirement funds. She shows the next group that comes in at 12pm a neutral (non-stressful) video about how to make a key lime pie. She gives each participant 4 servings of popcorn during the movie and measures how much each person eats while they watch. She finds that those who watched the stressful video ate more than those who saw the non-stressful video.

2. How many levels are there for the independent variable?
There are two levels for the independent variable. One being the group that came in at 9 am and the other one being the group that went in at 12 pm.
3. What is the dependent variable?
The dependent variable is how much more the students ate when they were stressed.
