Assignment:
Your first one to two years of college are generally occupied by taking required courses that are largely under the umbrella of the liberal arts, no matter what your intended major or degree is. This article entitled "What is a Liberal Arts Education? Links to an external site." gives a very brief introduction to courses under the liberal arts as well as the skills learned in these classes. (Please note: this article has nothing to do with political affiliation.)
If you look at that link, you'll see that the very first grouping of classes is Humanities. If you've never taken a humanities course before, you might be wondering what it is. As you see from that list there are classes that are designated part of the humanities. But what distinguishes a humanities course from the courses under the humanities umbrella?
Humanities classes are interdisciplinary classes. In a humanities class, we don't look just at art, philosophy, religion, government, literature, etc, we look at everything with an eye to understanding the total experience of mankind in every age and culture. We'll look at what's going on in history and see how that shapes all aspects of mankind's experience.
People sometimes wonder why they have to take a humanities class. How will it benefit them? What are they going to do with it? Will they learn anything valuable?
For your first assignment, you'll be answering the question "What is the importance of studying the Humanities?" You can answer any kind of variation of this question. If you want to become a doctor for instance, you can look into how a humanities class will help you as a doctor. You can answer what skills you will gain from studying humanities. There is no lack of articles, blogs, etc. concerning this subject, so you should have no trouble finding information or even statistics for its benefit.
