Redwood Benefits Inc. was an employer participating in the college work fair. Deb was graduating in the spring in Finance and had met with the Boris, the HR manager. She passed her resume to him and was glad to receive a call from Boris requesting she attend for an interview for a Claims Examiner position. Because she had little real work experience, she "added" a couple of fictitious summer jobs to her resume. She asked her two best friends to be the work references for those fictitious jobs and to give her glowing references.
Boris, the HR Manager was very busy doing interviews of 9 applicants. The applicants each had 30 minutes with Boris to convince him that they were the best choice. He told them what the job duties were and then asked them to him why they were the best candidate. As one applicant left through one door, another was shown in through the other door. Boris was running behind so he relied on his memory, which was very good to remember what each candidate told him. Deb was the last interview. She was asked to convince him and so she told him all about her college experience. He heard that Deb had a 4.0 GPA and was going to be receiving an award for her academics. Boris decided right there that she was the best applicant of all of them. After all, a 4.0 GPA was incredible.
Boris hired Deb after checking with her summer work references and hearing so many good things about her.
Deb was excited to start her position. Pooja showed up early to the orientation session and learned all about the company harassment policy and signed her payroll and tax forms. She was shown to her desk after lunch and told to start her work as a Claims Examiner. Based upon the job description duties she recalled from the interview, she proceeded to look at the files and complete the paperwork in the files. She thought that she was doing well, until a year later at her first review with her manager, she was told that she was at the bottom rating, and to not expect any merit increase. She was lucky to have her job.
