What is the impact of social media on local businesses? Is it positive, negative, neutral? Why?

I believe the impact of social media on local businesses has had mostly positive effects. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, etc. offer an alternative and new way for small business to advertise. Even better, a lot of these platforms are free! Social media has helped local businesses gain visibility but also offer a better way of communicating with their customers. Social media also offers search engines which can help gain visibility from potential customers. Many businesses also have ratings where their customers can leave reviews on the business, their products, and/or services. This rating system can also help draw in more potential customers. When people see a high rated business or product, they are more likely to purchase. Businesses can also take advantage of this rating system to respond to customer complaints, compliments, and questions. They can also use this to evaluate the businesses opportunities and strengths. Although there are many advantages, there are also a few negatives of social media. The first negative that comes to mind with social media is the accessibility to reach a large audience. And although this can also be a positive, many customers now-a-day are quick to go to social media to voice their complaints and anger over a product, brand or service. These complaints can quickly gain momentum due to the sharing, or re-posting, option many social media sites offer. And what could have been a complaint settled privately with the business, is now public which can cause detrimental damage to the businesses reputation. Another disadvantage of social media is the amount of competition present on social media. It is important for a business to be one step ahead of the game to continually attract new customers, as well as keeping their rating high to compete against other competing businesses.
