Problem: Illegal immigration
This problem will help students become more knowledgeable of the social welfare policy literature, as well as other professional literature. Each student will obtain and review 3 Journal Articles related to their legislative or policy interest. These articles should also assist students with their other assignments including the Policy Brief or Research Paper and the Panel Presentation.
A. Use the UNT library database or other academic or professional database to search for appropriate peer- reviewed articles related to your topic. The article should be of sufficient depth to be critiqued.
B. Summarize in a narrative format the findings from each article your review. Not articles will contain all of the information listed below, but use the Policy Analysis format from your textbook (McNutt and Hoefer, 2021)
1. Verify and define the problem: What is the history of the problem? How is it defined? How widespread is the problem? Who is effected? Are there alternative definitions?
2. Establish evaluation criteria: How is data collected about the problem? What are the theories? What are the experiences of people dealing with the situation caused by the problem? What are the goals?
3. Identify alternative policies: What are viable ways of dealing with the problem? What is nothing is done?
4. Evaluate alternative policies: What is more effective? What costs the least? Which is easier to implement? Are there consequences form implementing one alternative over the other?
5. Display and distinguish among alternatives: matrix of choices; political and value implications; Decision maker selects from the choices
6. Implement and monitor: Taking a plan and making it a real program. Creating a setting and putting the policy in to practice. Evaluating the results. How does the article reflect some of these issues? Be sure to specify which issues the article addresses, as well as summarizing what you have read or learned from the article.
