Exercise 1:

Consider a sealed 4 m by 3 m by 2.4 m room.

(a) How much heat is needed to increase the temperature of the air it contains from 0oC to 20oC

(b) If the room is heated with a 1500 watt electric heater, about how long will it take to achieve this temperature increase?

Exercise 2:

Temperatures of 35oC and 22oC are maintained on opposite sides of a steel floor 6 mm thick. What is the heat flux (Wm-2) through the floor?

Hint: Heat flux is measured in Watts per square metre and 1 Watt is 1 Joule per second. Take equation 3 and divide both sides by the area.
