Question:

Population genetics can be used to model evolution in Mendelian populations.

A. What is the Hardy-Weinberg equation (write it out) and what does it show?

B. Will selection eliminate a harmful recessive allele from a population as quickly as it will remove a harmful dominant allele? Why or why not?

C. Building on the Hardy-Weinberg equation, write an equation for heterozygous superiority that represents the following situation: The ZZ homozygote has a fitness of .83, the zz homozygote has a fitness of 71, the initial frequency of Z is X, and the initial frequency of z is Y.

D. In cases of heterozygous superiority, which allele (if either) will eventually disappear from the population? Explain.

E. Considering your answers to previous parts of this question, why might certain "harmful" alleles persist in the population over long periods of time? Explain.
