Each student will select a protein from the list (Protein and Reference/Brief Description) provided to study using theDeepView program and the primary literature on the protein.

You will write a paper describing the molecule in detail.
Your paper should include (at minimum) the following:

1) Background information on actin.
a. What is the function of the protein?
b. Why is it of interest?
c. Where is it synthesized and/or active?

2) Structural information on the protein.
a. How many subunits are present?
b. What are the secondary structural elements of the protein?
c. How many domains are present?
d. Which domains / folds / motifs are present?
e. How do these individual domains impart a complex function to the protein as a whole?

3) Specific descriptions of molecular interactions of the protein.
f. Describe three to four molecular interactions that are important for the protein's structure function.
i. These descriptions need to be accompanied with DeepView generated images. You need to show the importance of the interactions for the protein's activity and/or function.
ii. Try and color residues, highlight interactions etc. in DeepView.

4) Retrieve the primary amino acid sequence of your protein.
g. Get full sequence (AA) from Swiss-Prot / RCSB-PDB / PubMed, or any other protein database.See links below.

5) Use the sequence (and/or protein/gene ID) to perform AT MINIMUM the following functions.

h. Search for secondary structure.
i. Screenshot and describe your results.

i. Search for trans-membrane regions.
i. Screenshot and describe your results even if there are "none".

6) Suggest ONE additional protein to add to the list below and provide the following:
j. It must not be on the list already.
k. The specific name.
l. The gene ID /swissprot ID.
m. One sentence description.
n. The reference for the original paper.
Make sure the paper is 100% your own work and in your own words.
o. If any copy and pasting is detected your grade will suffer.
p. Screen shots of images and figures from the internet is OK.
q. No two students can choose the same molecule.
r. Submit the original research paper for your protein along with your paper.

Verified Expert

The current assignment was based on the evaluation of the protein uncomplexed actin 1j6z. The details regarding the protein have been discussed. The interaction of the protein with other proteins and molecules have been elucidated as well.
