The yellow gene is on the X chromosome in Drosophila. The y allele at this locus is recessive and leads to a yellow body color. The y+ (wildtype) allele is dominant and leads to a brown body color. In a large randomly-mating lab population of flies, 15% of male flies have a yellow body color. Please use this information to answer the questions below (please round answers to three decimal places).

  • What is the frequency of the yellow allele (y) in this population of flies?
  • What is the frequency of the wildtype body color allele (y+) in this population?
  • What proportion of female flies in this population would you expect to be heterozygotes?
  • What proportion of female flies in this population would you expect to have a yellow body color?
  • If a random male and female in this population mate (assume the female has mated with only one male), what proportion of the progeny would be females with yellow body color?
