A 4m long wire with thickness 5mm carries a current 0.4 A. A second identical wire of equal length and thickness is parallel and carries 0.6 A in the same direction. The two wires are separated by 12 cm as measured from the outside of the wire.

a) (1pt) What is the direction of the net force on the second wire? (Draw in diagram)

b) (4pt) What is the force of the first wire on the second wire?

Thin-lens representation of a compound microscope : The figure below shows a thin-lens representation of a compound microscope (not to scale). The objective produces a real image I of object O just inside the focal point F1 of the eyepiece. Image I then acts as an object for the eyepiece, which pro..
Calculate the magnitude of the electric field : Three concentric uniformly charged isolating shells (hollow spheres) of radii 6cm, 10cm, and 20cm each carry a charge. The smallest shell carries 3nC, the medium 4nC, and the largest shell 5nC. Here, concentric means that all three shells share th..
Amount of voltage induced if measured at the ends of wire : A uniform magnetic field of 25 mT magnitude points into the page. The wire is 1.4m long and straight, but has a loop smack in the middle. The loop has a radius of 3cm. The wire is then quickly - within 50ms - pulled taut and the loop disappears. Calc..
Variable strength is used to steer electrons in television : A focused magnetic field of variable strength is used to "steer" electrons in a television tube (CRT). The electrons emerge in a stream from a "gun" that has accelerated them across a potential difference. A magnetic field can deflect the beam of ..
What is the force of the first wire on the second wire : A 4m long wire with thickness 5mm carries a current 0.4 A. A second identical wire of equal length and thickness is parallel and carries 0.6 A in the same direction. The two wires are separated by 12 cm as measured from the outside of the wire.
What is the voltage in the secondary coil : A step-up transformer increases 15.7V to 110V. What is the current in the secondary as compared to the primary? Assume 100 percent efficiency.
Find the magnitude of the tension t in the cable : A uniform beam of negligible weight is supported by a cable. The beam is pivoted at the bottom and a 2000-N object hangs from its top. Find the magnitude of the tension T in the cable.
Observations corresponds to which frequency of light : If I have light of three different frequencies, 9.2x10^14 Hz; 6.7x10^14 Hz; 4.7x10^14 Hz that is shined on a metal surface with the observations for each frequency labled A,B, and C as follows:
Direct measurement of the spread of the photon energy : In special conditions, it is possible to measure the energy of a gamma-ray photon to 1 part in 10^15. For a photon energy of of 50 keV, estimate the maximum lifetime that could be determined by a direct measurement of the spread of the photon energy.
