Basic equations (2)
Considering an two-dimensional irrotational flow of ideal fluid:
- write the Navier-Stokes equation (assuming gravity forces),
- substitute the irrotational flow condition and the velocity potential,
- integrate each equation with respect to x and y,
- what is the final integrated form of the three equations of motion? This equation is called the Bernoulli equation for unsteady flow.
- For a steady flow write the Bernoulli equation. When the velocity is known, how do you determine the pressure?
If the initial concentration of parathion in the runoff from the agricultural field is 3 ppb, the velocity of the river is 2.3 miles/day, how many days will the fish hatchery have to contain river water in holding tanks until the parathion concent..
A Chemical manufacturer emits air with 250 PPM of toluene at 1 atm and 30 degrees C at a flow rate of 10,000 cubic meters per minute. The air is routed to a biofilter to control total emissions to less than 110 kg/day of toluene.

Determine the clean filter head loss in a filter bed composed of 0.3 m of uniform anthracite (with an average size of 1.6 mm) placed over 0.3 m of uniform sand ( with an average size of 0.5 mm) for a filtration rate of 160 L/m^2.min.
A series of small packages, each with a mass of 0.5 kg, are discharged from a conveyor belt. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction between each package and the conveyor belt is 0.4, determine (a) the force exerted by the belt on the package
The machine part ABC is supported by a frictionless hinge at B and a wedge at C. Knowing that the coefficient of static friction is 0.20 at both surfaces of the wedge, determine:
A 2,400 foot long, 2 foot diameter pipline conveys water from ahilltop reservoir to an industrial site. The pipe is made of ductile iron, has an outside diameter of of 2.25 feet, and has expansion joints.
If the diameters of ball bearings are normally distributed with mean 0.6140 inches and standard deviation 0.0025 inches, determine the percentage of ball bearings with diameters,
Taking the properties of the egg to be p=1020 kg/m3 and cp 3.32 kJ/kg · °C, determine how much heat is transferred to the egg by the time the average temperature of the egg rises to 80°C.
A room is heated by a baseboard resistance heater. When the heat losses from the room on a winter day amount to 6500 kJ/h, the air temperature in the room remains constant even though the heater operates continuously.
What is the minimum distance from the stalled car at which the driver could apply the brakes and still stop before hitting it? Assume coefficient of rolling resistance of 0.013.
Find the velocity of the air downstream of the restriction, and show that the enthalpy is essentially the same before and after the throttling process. Also find the change of entropy.
