Assignment:

You are now ready to complete the first task about Choices in Biology. In this Activity, you have collected details about the consequences of a heavy metal pollutant on human health. You have also identified a cellular biotechnology that uses a microorganism in removing it.

Your task is to research one heavy metal endocrine disruptor or heavy metal neurotoxin that affects humans.

Using good Self-Regulation skills, you may choose to research the same heavy metal you have been describing in this Activity. Alternatively, review some of the other heavy metals from the class discussion. You may find that the effect of the heavy metal you can describe the best is not the first one you began researching.

As you continue your research, keep track of your sources. The important details to collect are:

  1. What is the environmental source of the heavy metal?
  2. What are the symptoms of being exposed to this heavy metal endocrine disruptor or heavy metal neurotoxin?
  3. What gland, hormone or neuronal process is affected?
  4. How does the change in hormone levels or neuron activity cause the symptoms?
  5. Describe the options for protecting ourselves from the heavy metal. Can we prevent them at the source, in the environment, and/or clean them up with microorganisms?

You will present what you have learned about this heavy metal pollutant using either a feedback model diagram or a flowchart.
