A dugong died in Thailand
What is a dugong and why should we be concerned about an animal with an odd name dying in a far off country. It is not the fact that it died that is a concern here, but how it died. The dugong died of serious infections brought on by plastics lining its stomach. It is not just the dugong; plastics are impacting ecosystems around that world in significant ways. Plastics are all around us. Anything that we buy seems to involve plastic in some way shape of form.Environmental Protection Agency in the 1970s recognized the serious concerns with growing use of plastics. Reduce Reuse and Recycle program was designed to bring awareness and help alleviate the growing mountains of plastic waste. Attempts to reduce the plastic pollution have mostly focused on recycling. Depending on when the city recycles we can see plastic bins lining the sidewalks waiting to be picked up. But is that the answer to our problem.
But what happens to all the plastics that is being recycled? Has it been an effective means to reduce plastic pollution. Should we focus on reducing more than recycling?
