You are boiling a kettle of water over a propane stove that is supplying a uniforma amount of heat. You note that it takes 3 minutes to heat water which is initially at 20C to its boiling point. Just as the water begins to boil, you receive a phone call and forget about the water.

a) How long would it take to boil the kettle dry? List any assumptions you make in the calculation

b) Assume that the propane flame temp is 750C, what is the entropy change of the water during the first 3 minutes?

c) What is the entropy change of the flame during the first 3 minutes?

d) What is the entropy change of the water-steam mixture from 3 minutes to the time the kettle is boiled dry?

e) What is the entropy change of the flame from 3 minutes to the time the kettle is boiled dry?

f) Show that the 2nd law of thermodynamics is not being violated during the first 3 minutes as well as during the period from 3 minutes to the time the kettle is boiled dry?
