Describing Landforms
Meteor Crater: formed 50,000 years ago when an asteroid plunged through the Earth's atmosphere and crashed into what would become central Arizona. Because of the crater's young age and the dry climate Meteor Crater is the best-preserved impact crater on Earth.
Use the ruler tool to determine the present-day diameter of Meteor Crater in Arizona.
When the distance between two placemarks are measured the crater comes out to be around 1.2 km.
Use the polygon tool to outline the rim of Meteor Crater and estimate its area (in km2).
Tilt and rotate the view to get a better 3-dimensional picture of the crater. Copy the image and include here.
Lower Curtis Glacier: The Lower Curtis Glacier is located in North Cascades National Park, Washington. It fills a spectacular cirque on the south side of Mount Shuksan. It is fed from above by avalanches off of the Upper Curtis Glacier and the walls of Shuksan.
What is the elevation of Mount Shuksan (in meters)?
What is the north-south extend of the Lower Curtis Glacier in meters?
What is the east-west extend of the Lower Curtis Glacier in meters?
What is the area covered by snow in the Lower Curtis Glaciers (in km2)?
Rotate and tilt the view to get a good impression of the topography in the area. Copy image and include here.
