It is important to establish that you have read and correctly understood a text before discussing, analyzing, and interpreting what that text means. This is especially true as you read non-fiction.

One method you can use to understand non-fiction is to disassemble it using the "Five Ws (and One H)" approach that is employed by journalists, researchers, and legal professionals. Answering who, what, when, where, why, and how about a work of non-fiction can take you a long way in understanding what that piece is about.

Select a work of non-fiction and apply the "Five Ws (and One H)" approach. Be sure to answer who, what, when, where, why, and how about the piece that you select. Examine a literary element that is at work in the non-fiction piece you selected.

What is the element and how does it function within the piece? Address these points in a 1-2 page Word document.
