Part 1: Discussion
After reading the above materials, I'd like you to choose one of the essays from your weekly reading to discuss. You can relate it to our society today, a recent news item, or your own experience.
This should be at least 200 words.
Part 2: Write your comments(100 words each)
In the news this week I saw a little girl crying because her father was arrested, leaving his daughter 11 year old on her own. Image the trauma this child must be going through. I work in a detox facility as a counselor. the stories that are told by clients often start out with this kind of trauma or abuse. Racism in America is seriously out of control. Our government seems to be on board with these horrible acts played out by I.C.E and other agencies in place ,they are a modern day prison . We have to get out and vote to make our voices heard. We are watching men women and children being controlled in ways that are inhumane. This president seems to have an insensitivity to cultural differences. We must find a way to live and let live. People of all races backgrounds and religions ought to have a place in America ,we all come from and have ancestors who naturally came from another place in this world. We have to do better because peoples lives are being disrupted daily in the news. It is almost sickening to watch anymore. It seems to me no one cares until something happened in our own back yards. 2020 lets all get out and vote for the right president to take command.
Comment:
Out of the selected reading for this week, I decided to speak about the article "America's Dirty Work: Migrant Maids and Modern-Day Slavery" by Joy M. Zarembka. Reading this article was disheartening, to say the least. It speaks of individuals coming to the United States to work, and send money back to their country to support their family. In the process of working as a domestic, they are abused, mistreated, paid less than minimum wage, and threatened by their employer. Learning of all the things migrant workers have had to endure is shameful. This is a continuation of the past when slavery was enforced. This is happening in America. Once arrival in the U.S, their visas are confiscated by their employer. Just imagine being in a foreign country, unable to speak the language, having no contacts, working under conditions compared to slavery, and being cut-off from family and their culture (Disch, 2009, p. 458). This is modern-day slavery, trafficking, and abuse resulting from illegal manipulation and deception.
This makes me uncomfortable. Over the course of the past couple of years, this has been highlighted in the media such as "Trump Organization Hires Undocumented Immigrants." The same people (present administration in the White House) that are against migrants are the ones guilty of hiring them and paying them less than their worth. Claiming they're taking jobs away for the people that are supposed to be here. They do not! Migrant workers do the jobs we don't want to do. Plus, this is a nation built by immigrants. It is disheartening to think that a migrant domestic worker in a potentially violent situation is legally better off staying and getting beaten because she will later be able to receive a work permit, social services, and legal status (Disc, 2009, p. 458). If she leaves before violence erupts, she receives nothing. This is hard to imagine happening in the United States. It is a reality for some migrant workers.
