1.) Explain in your own words

What is the difference between a thin and a thick lens?
a) State the lens makers equation and explain all parameters involved.
b) Which lens is used for correcting nearsightedness - use a sketch and words.
c) What is meant by convergence - make a sketch and explain.
d) Explain chromatic aberration with an example.

2.) Thick lenses
The front surface of a thick lens in air has -5.00D power and the back surface has
+10.00D power. The lens is 3cm thick and has index 1.5. Find the equivalent power of the lens and locate it principal planes.

3.) Photocopier
(a) Describe what a copy machine does, using the expressions we have used for optical instruments (object, image, lens, etc.)
(b) Which lenses would you need to use and how many of them to get the basic function?
(c) Make a sketch, what this would look like.

4.) Bragg reflection
(a) State Bragg's law and identify all parameters involved.
(b) Make a sketch with two layers of atoms and show all parameters.
(c) For a wavelength of 0.330 nm and first order and a lattice spacing of 0.215 nm, what angle will give you a diffraction maximum?
(d) Describe an application of bragg diffraction.

5.) Thick lens (again)
It is found that sunlight is focused to a spot 29.6cm from the back face of a thick lens, which has principal planes P1 at +0.2cm to the front face and P2 at -0.4cm to the back face. Determine the location of the image of a candle that is placed 49.8cm in front of the lens. Draw the system.
