A rectangular concrete channel is being designed to take the discharge from a hydroelectric power scheme back to an estuary. The channel is 4m wide and has a slope of S0 = 0.001. Due to concerns about the salt water content in the estuary, the discharge in the channel needs to be varied to mimic tidal effects. This means that for 12 hours a day, the channel needs to carry a flow of 8m3.s1, and for the other 12 hours the flow reduces to 4m3.s1.

What is the depth of the flow in the channel during the high and low flow periods?

During the high flow period, is the channel close to the best hydraulic section for this flow? If not, how could it be redesigned to achieve the best hydraulic section?
