The nurse subsequently reports a temperature of 40.2°C (104.4°F), a heart rate of 114 beats per minute, and a blood pressure of 180/110 mmHg. An hour later, the patient is stiff and sweating profusely. His white blood cell count is 28,000/mm3, and his creatine kinase level is 50,000 U/L. Over the next 24 hours, he becomes minimally responsive to verbal stimuli.
