Assignment:
We will learn about informational interviewing and then you will find a professional to interview on your own outside of class. This should be a professional who works in Management Information Systems or a business field that interests you and should not be an immediate family member.
After the interview, students will write a three -four page reflection on the experience, including considering the following questions (Note: the reflection should not be a list of questions with your answers, it should read like a fluid, reflective essay).
Sample questions for interview:
1. What was your career pathway (from education to current role)?
2. What is the day-to-day job like?
3. What kinds of professionals do you work with on a regular basis?
4. What skills or information or topics do you wish you had learned as a student?
5. How did you get your first professional opportunity (internship or job)? What was the application/search/interview process like?
6. What are your next career plans? Is there a typical path forward for employees at your company?
- What trends are you seeing in the industry?
7. Is there anyone else you recommend that I speak with?
Reflection prompts for paper:
- How did this person's education influence or help their career? What skills did they learn in school that they use on the job?
Why did they choose their first professional job? Did they consider values, interests, skills? Any other factors?
What influenced their decision to take their current job (promotion, career change, etc)? What values do you hear reflected in their decisions? Do they align with your values?
As you think about your own career plans, how do they relate to the choices this person has made? Do you see yourself in a similar field/job? Why or why not? What might you do differently?
- What skills do you need to develop to pursue this field (assuming you plan to do so)? How do you plan to work on these skills?
Will this person be a useful contact for you as you enter the workforce and/or explore opportunities? Can they connect you with others for additional conversations and advice? What kinds of other contacts/professionals should you connect with next?
