Assignment - Computer Science Question
Description - A large tech company, "Blamazon", offers a digital home assistant, which is voice activated. When customers set up their assistant, they are informed that the device is listening at all times in order to hear its wake word. Small segments of audio heard by the device are sent back anonymously to the Company for Quality Assurance purposes, but customers are not told this.
Write a 1250+ word essay discussing any privacy concerns you believe are associated with the Blamazon device. In preparing your essay, consider the questions below:
What is the customer's expectation of privacy/anonymity regarding the audio captured by the device?
Does a customer give up any privacy rights when they purchase and/or decide to use this device?
What ethical issues arise regarding other people whose conversations may be recorded without their knowledge, especially guests and children? How would these ethical issues be viewed differently depending upon which ethical theory is used to analyze them?
If a Blamazon employee is reviewing captured audio for QA and hears evidence of a crime, do they have an ethical duty to report the crime (even if it is outside intent of capturing the audio)?
While you need not address all of these questions in your essay, you should present a thoughtful and in-depth analysis of some significant issues suggested by this product, as well as an ethical analysis of its use using at least one of the ethical theories (other than relativism) presented in the text or class lecture.
