What is the Credit Risk Culture of JP Morgan and MUFG? Credit Risk Appetite (A). All organisations must expose themselves to financial risk to create value. Credit risk management begins with understanding the credit risk appetite of the organisation. Credit risk appetite defines the hunger of the organisation for credit risk-the level (and type) of acceptable credit risk. Management and the Board of Directors (representing Stakeholders) must have a mutual understanding regarding the drivers of, and parameters around, opportunity-seeking behaviour. The Board of Directors ensures the organisation has an appropriate risk management framework in place to identify and manage credit risk on an ongoing basis. It sets the credit risk appetite (the willingness to take on credit risk), credit risk tolerance (credit risk capacity, i.e., the ability to take credit risk) and the level of credit risk required (to meet a particular return goal). Management are responsible for designing and implementing the framework. What semantics of credit risk does the organisation use, do they talk about 'risk-taking', 'harm', 'at-risk', 'opportunity'?. Credit risk management is the culture, processes and structures that are directed towards taking advantage of potential lending opportunities while managing potential adverse effects (value protection). In credit risk reporting, does the organisation talk more about 'risk taking' than 'exposure to credit risk' or 'at-risk'? Do they talk about 'lack of control'? Do they talk about ongoing monitoring? Do they talk about on and/or off balance sheet credit risk?
