Case: Jerry was visiting Atlanta, Georgia, with her family. She loves flea markets and sought out the largest flea market in Atlanta. At one of the stalls, Jerry and her eleven-year-old daughter looked at jewelry. The stall owner asked if they were from out of town. Jerry admitted they were from New Hampshire. The owner said, "I have the perfect thing for you." He looked to the left and the right and then reached under the table, pulling out what looked like an old t-shirt. He unwrapped a beautiful bracelet with four colorful stones. Both Jerry and her daughter felt like the owner was a bit sketchy but, they didn't question things. Confident they were getting a good deal, they paid $50 for the bracelet. On the way back to the hotel, they stopped at a jeweler and asked to have the bracelet cleaned up. They also asked what the jeweler thought it was worth. The jeweler said he had not seen anything like it and guessed it was worth thousands of dollars. Jerry and her daughter were pleased with themselves. When they left, the jeweler called the police. The police had only learned that morning that a bracelet had been stolen from a local collection of rare Middle Eastern jewelry. The bracelet matched the description the jeweler provided. The police went to the hotel and took possession of the bracelet. The police told Jerry that they were "investigating" but that she could be charged with Receiving Stolen Property. They asked Jerry not to leave the state of Georgia for three days so they could finish their investigation.
