Case Study: In this forum, each student will introduce a species to the class. You should complete this exercise after viewing the VoiceThread on Primate Taxonomy, the VoiceThread on Primate Behavior and other posted resources. Choose one extant (not extinct) Primate species. If your last name begins with A-K, choose a species that belongs to the Haplorrhine suborder. Do not chose Homo sapiens, Pan troglodytes, Pan paniscus or Gorillas). If your last name begins with L-Z, choose any species that belongs to the suborder Strepsirrhine. Do not choose Lemur catta.
Your species must belong to the taxonomic order Primates or you will have to redo your post.
Question: A) What is the common name of the species?
Question: B) What is the species' binominal - two-part name. The genus should be upper case, and the species should be lower case and the whole binominal should be italicized (e.g. Pan troglodytes)
Question: C) What suborder does your species belong to? (Tell the class, even though I have assigned you to one of the two suborders.)
Question: D) In what country or countries is this species found in nature? Describe the habitat (e.g. forested areas; grasslands, etc.). Are there any populations in zoos, rehabilitation cites or research centers?
Question: E) What is your Primate's IUCN Red Book status and what does that mean? Do they face any challenges? Are there any sanctuaries or other efforts to protect them from humans?
Question: F) Locate and share a video of your Primate. Provide us with the title and link. Who made the video? Is it a professional or amateur video? What does the video show?
Question: G) Which of the Primate traits (see the VoiceThread) can we see in your video - be specific?
Question: H) Using concepts from the VoiceThread on Primate Behavior, tell us about the behavior of your species. Are they monogamous or polygamous? Do they live in large troops? Are they nocturnal or diurnal? What do they eat? What form of locomotion do they engage in? Do they make tools or do anything else interesting?
