A small boy living in a rural village in South America quickly becomes very sick with frequent diarrhea is very watery. He is quickly becoming severely dehydrated. International aid workers happen to be helping out in the village after a recent hurricane and severe flooding crippled the area. Aid workers believe they know what is causing the boy's severe diarrhea and dehydration, but perform a stool culture. Gram staining reveals a pink, comma-shaped, rod bacterium.
