Case Study: Your Mission: Below is a network of interactions in Iowa. A farmer who grows wheat is very frustrated that birds are eating so much of her crop. She decides to grow her wheat under netting that keeps out birds (unfortunately, it doesn't keep out grasshoppers or mice). The nets definitely kept out the birds, but to her surprise, the next season the wheat is being MORE damaged by herbivores! She calls you in to figure out why excluding birds from the wheat field made the situation worse. You suspect that without birds as predators the grasshopper population is increasing and eating more grain. You decide to test whether bird predation decreases grasshopper populations.
