It's time for Chief Fife to purchase new handguns for the department. The department was carrying Sig Sauer 9mm pistols. However, the last 10 people that were shot by police last year required at least 15 rounds of 9mm to put them down. The Chief decides that the department should go with .45 cal. Pistols this time. There are two .45 pistols that the department can purchase that are within budget: the Heckler & Koch USP and the Glock 21. The Chief wants to decide which gun would be best for the department in terms of accuracy so he selects 10 of the best shooters on the department to test fire the H&K and the Glock on the practical pistol course.

The data are:

Officer H&K Glock
Williams 97 99
Smith 98 95
Wagner 94 90
James 95 89
Bowman 93 87
Tate 90 82
Phillips 96 92
Andrews 99 90
Johnson 87 81
White 88 80
Use SPSS to calculate the appropriate t-test and complete the following:
The t statistic is________________
Degrees of Freedom = _____________
Level of Significance = ___________
Independent Variable = _______________
Dependent Variable = _________________
Does the Chief have evidence at the .05 level of significance that one gun over the other is best? Yes_____ No _____
At the .01 level of significance? Yes___ No___
Explain your answer in your own words and include the comparison means in your discussion:

The District Attorney is concerned that some officers on the police force are having difficulty presenting evidence in court which is affecting conviction rates. The DA believes the officers need some training on how to present evidence in court and in courtroom demeanor. The DA offers a training program for ten of the officers on the department and compares their conviction rates before the training and after the training. Below are the data:
Officer Before After
1 80 85
2 70 80
3 60 70
4 80 80
5 70 75
6 80 85
7 60 75
8 80 85
9 70 85
10 60 80
Use SPSS to calculate the appropriate t-test and answer the following questions:
The independent variable is:_________________
The dependent variable is: __________________
The t statistic is: _______________
The Degrees of Freedom are: ____________
Did the training program work at the .05 level of significance? Yes____ No____
Did the training program work at the .01 level of significance? Yes____ No____
What was the level of significance? ____________
State your conclusions in your own words and include means in your discussion:

The Commissioner of the State Board of Probation & Parole in Tennessee is concerned that state probation officers have too many cases to work in comparison to neighboring states. The Commissioner selects 5 metropolitan areas within the state and compares the workload reports to workload reports in 3 neighboring states using comparable metropolitan areas. Below are average caseloads per officer in the 5 metro regions in each of the 4 states being compared. Does the Commissioner have scientific evidence that Tennessee has significantly higher caseloads than neighboring states? If so, the Commissioner might be justified in asking for more employees at the next budget hearing.

Tennessee Georgia Virginia North Carolina
Metro Area
1 72 67 34 52
2 44 62 43 61
3 81 71 42 48
4 79 60 37 39
5 83 56 42 44

State the null hypothesis and identify the independent and dependent variables.
Ho:
Independent = _______________________________Dependent = ______________________________
Perform One Way ANOVA with Tukey HSD to determine any significant differences.
F = ____________DF = ___________ SIG = ____________
Tennessee Mean = _________ SD = ___________
Georgia Mean = _____________SD= ___________
Virginia Mean = ____________SD= ____________
North Carolina Mean = __________SD=___________
Tukey HSD results (describe):

Professor Smith wants to determine if a correlation exists between absences and final grade. She determines the number of absences for ten students in her class and then determines the mean final score for those students. Below are her data:

Student       Absences     Score

1.              0                    95

2.              1                    90

3.              4                    72

4.              3                    78

5.              2                    84

6.              5                    67

7.              4                    71

8.              2                    80

9.              7                    55

10.            5                    64

1. State the research and null hypotheses:

2. The Independent Variable is:___________________________

3. The Dependent Variable is: ____________________________

4. Pearson's R = __________ Positive or Negative? ____________

5. The R is: Strong ______ Moderate _______ Weak ______

6. The Coefficient of Determination is: __________

7. The t statistic is ________ Significant at the _______ level.

8. What percent of the change in the dependent variable can be attributed to the independent variable? ________%

9. If a student had 6 absences, what would their final score likely be? __________

10. State your conclusions. Do you reject the null hypothesis? Is attendance important in order to get a good grade in Professor Smith's class?

(this survey requires you to have SPSS installed I can mail you the file for it)

I. Using the General Social Survey test the hypothesis that one's political view (polviews) is independent of their view regarding the legalization of marijuana (grass).

II. Should marijuana be made legal (grass)

III. Think of self as liberal or conservative (polviews)

1. What is the calculated chi-square statistic? _______

2. What are the degrees of freedom? _________

3. Assuming a .01 level of significance, would we reject or fail to reject the null of independence? _____________

4. Assuming that both variables are measured at the nominal level, report the most appropriate measure of association? _________

5. Write a short description of your results, including the level of statistical and substantive significance, the direction of the association, and whether any low expected frequencies threaten our findings. II. You believe that increasing urbanization (Variable d8: Urbanization of community) results in increased gun ownership (Variable d11: Any guns in your household?) for personal protection in response to the comparatively high crime rates that distinguish urban from rural areas. Use the National Opinion Survey on Crime and Justice to test your hypothesis.

1. State the null hypothesis:

2. The independent variable is:___________________________________

3. The dependent variable is:_____________________________________

4. Assuming a .05 Alpha level, do we reject or fail to reject the null of independence?

5. Report the most appropriate measure of association: ______________ Is this a strong, moderate, or weak association?_________________

6. Do the data support your hypothesis regarding the direction of the relationship? __________

7. What do the data suggest regarding gun ownership and urbanization?
