Question: The Heliocentric Model of planetary motion states that the planets travel around the sun in slightly elliptical orbits. The Earth is tilted 23.5 degrees from a line perpendicular to its plane of rotation. In this model the tilt of Earth's axis of rotation is what causes the seasons, and is also the reason the sun's highest altitude varies. On about March 22 or 23 and again on about September 22 or 23, Earth passes through an equinox -- Latin for "equal night." On these two days, the Earth gets 12 hours or light and 12 hours of darkness, and the sun climbs to an altitude equal to (90 - L) degrees above the horizon, where L is the latitude of the observer. In the case of Fort Myers, the latitude is 26.6 degree. What is the calculated altitude of the Sun on the day of equinoxes?
