Managing the privacy of (potentially vulnerable) others

Even before birth (think ultrasound pictures), children have a digital footprint. This can be problematic is a world where background checks for employment, for example, are increasingly thorough. What are parents' responsibilities regarding protecting the privacy of their children?

And what about young users of all things digital? There are questions regarding the duty of care of organisations such as the social media giants and their younger users, as well as calls for the government to consider strengthening data protection laws. How should this issue be dealt with going forward?

Are there other potentially vulnerable groups of people when it comes to privacy in a digital world?

Using the stimulus material, research, develop and write a blog that expresses your viewpoint.

Unintended consequences of regulation

There is general agreement that regulation typically plays catch-up to what is happening in the world. New issues emerge that leave regulators scrambling to come up with solutions. These solutions may have unintended consequences.

What are some current situations where there may be unintended consequences to regulation and how can this be avoided?

For example, Laws are aimed at preventing the "weaponisation of social media platforms" following the Christchurch attack during which Facebook's live-streaming service was used to broadcast the killing of 50 people have come under fire for potential 'unintended consequences' (Cheik-Hussein, 2019).

What is the best way to manage societal, business and individual interests in the process of introducing regulation? Should these always be balanced?
